1) Smart Lighting Control Installation in Leeds, Harrogate, Wetherby & Boston Spa

A recent smart lighting project we completed in Leeds perfectly sums up why more homeowners are investing in smart lighting control. The property had a large open-plan kitchen, dining and living space with six separate lighting circuits controlled by a standard six-gang switch. Everything technically worked, but the homeowners had no flexibility. The lights were either on or off.

After sitting down with the family and discussing how they actually used the room, it became clear they wanted different lighting scenes depending on what they were doing. Cooking, entertaining, watching television, relaxing and cleaning all needed different lighting levels. We retrofitted smart dimming modules, replaced the existing switch with a touchscreen controller and programmed custom scenes that transformed how the space worked day to day.

I've been working with lighting control systems for over 21 years and one thing I've learned is that good smart lighting isn't about technology for the sake of it. It's about making your home easier and more enjoyable to live in. Whether you're renovating, building an extension or looking to upgrade an existing property, we'll design a system that suits the way you actually use your home.

2) Smart Lighting Designed Around How You Live

One of the biggest misconceptions about smart lighting is that it's simply being able to switch lights on and off from your phone.

In reality, the best smart lighting systems disappear into the background and make everyday life simpler.

When we design a smart lighting system, we start by understanding how you use each room. A kitchen used for family meals, entertaining guests, homework sessions and relaxing in the evening requires very different lighting moods throughout the day.

That's exactly what we achieved for our recent Leeds client.

Their original six-gang switch controlled six lighting zones independently. While functional, it wasn't particularly practical. Every time they wanted a different atmosphere, they had to manually adjust multiple switches.

We installed smart dimmer modules behind the scenes with virtually no disruption to the décor. The existing switch was replaced with a modern touchscreen interface programmed with custom scenes:

Cleaning Scene
Every light in the room comes on at full brightness, making it easy to clean the space thoroughly.

Cooking Scene
Task lighting above the preparation areas is prioritised, providing clear visibility where it's needed most.

Dining Scene
Lighting focuses attention on the dining table, creating a more intimate atmosphere for meals.

TV Time Scene
Lighting around the seating area remains comfortable while lights that could create glare on the television are automatically dimmed or switched off.

Relax Scene
Only selected table lamps illuminate the room, creating a softer and more calming environment.

Goodnight Scene
One touch turns everything off before bed.

The touchscreen also integrates with the family's Sonos system, allowing them to trigger music playlists alongside lighting scenes. App control, Alexa and Google integration were also included.

That's what smart lighting should be: practical, reliable and tailored to the way you live.

4) Our Process

A lot of homeowners researching smart lighting control in Leeds and surrounding areas are concerned about disruption, complexity and whether they'll actually use the system.

That's why we keep the process straightforward.

1. Initial Discussion
We'll arrange a convenient time to discuss your goals.

This is where we learn how you use your space and what you'd like the system to achieve.

2. Home Survey
We'll visit your property to assess the existing installation and identify the least disruptive way to deliver the system.

In many cases, smart lighting can be retrofitted without major redecoration work.

3. Detailed Proposal
You'll receive a clear quotation outlining exactly what's included.

No vague allowances or confusing technical jargon.

4. Installation Booking
Once you're happy to proceed, we'll arrange a convenient installation date.

5. Installation & Configuration
We'll complete the electrical work, install the equipment and configure the system.

6. Demonstration & Fine Tuning
Before we leave, we'll walk you through the system and make any adjustments needed.

Lighting scenes often benefit from small tweaks once you've seen them in action.

7. Ongoing Support
If you need help later, we're still available.

Technology should make life easier, not leave you searching through manuals.

5) Why Homeowners Choose Us For Smart Lighting Projects

There are plenty of electricians who will install smart devices.

There are far fewer who specialise in designing and configuring complete lighting control systems.

When you work with us, you're working directly with someone who:

  • Has over 21 years of electrical experience
  • Is NAPIT Registered
  • Is a Which? Trusted Trader
  • Has completed specialist Lutron and Rako training
  • Has over 80 customer reviews
  • Personally designs and configures the systems installed
  • Provides a lifetime workmanship warranty
  • Turns up when promised
  • Treats your home with respect
  • Remains available for support after installation

One of the biggest differences is that we don't simply fit products and leave.

We take responsibility for the complete customer experience, from design through to programming and support.

6) Lutron, Rako, Shelly & Rithum Systems

Not all smart lighting products are created equal.

A common issue we see is homeowners being sold inexpensive smart devices purchased online simply because they're cheap and easy to install.

While these products often work initially, long-term reliability can be disappointing.

We've been called out to numerous installations where homeowners have become frustrated with unreliable connectivity, failed devices or systems that stop receiving software updates.

That's why we focus on proven platforms including:

Lutron Lighting
Widely regarded as one of the most reliable lighting control manufacturers available.

Ideal for premium residential projects and larger homes.

Rako Lighting
A flexible and highly respected UK lighting control system suitable for both retrofit and new-build installations.

Shelly
Excellent for discreet retrofit solutions where hidden smart control is required.

Rithum
Modern touchscreen interfaces that provide simple, intuitive control for homeowners.

We only specify products we would be happy installing in our own homes.

7) Smart Home Integration

Smart lighting often becomes the foundation of a wider smart home system.

Depending on your requirements, lighting can integrate with:

  • Sonos audio systems
  • Alexa
  • Google Home
  • Automated blinds
  • Heating controls
  • Security systems
  • Home cinema rooms

The goal is always to simplify control rather than add unnecessary complexity.

8) How Much Does Smart Lighting Installation Cost?

Every smart lighting project is different.

The final cost depends on factors including:

  • Number of lighting circuits
  • Property size
  • Existing wiring infrastructure
  • Choice of control system
  • Number of keypads or touchscreens
  • Integration requirements

A simple retrofit room solution will naturally cost less than a fully integrated whole-home system.

Following our survey, we'll provide a detailed quotation so you can clearly understand what's included and compare options properly.

10) FAQ SECTION

How disruptive is smart lighting installation?
In many cases, very little disruption is required. We regularly retrofit systems using hidden dimmer modules behind existing switches, allowing us to upgrade control without redecorating.

Can I control my lights from my phone?
Yes. Most systems we install allow control through a dedicated app as well as traditional wall controls. We can also integrate Alexa and Google Home voice control.

What's the difference between Rako and Lutron lighting?
Both are excellent systems. Lutron is often chosen for larger or premium projects, while Rako offers exceptional flexibility and value. We'll recommend the most suitable option based on your home and requirements.

Will smart lighting work if my internet goes down?
Yes. Properly designed systems continue to function locally through wall controls and programmed scenes even if your internet connection is unavailable.

How long does installation take?
This depends on the size and complexity of the project. A single-room retrofit can often be completed in a day, while larger whole-home systems may take longer.

Do you provide a warranty?
Yes. We provide a lifetime warranty on our workmanship. Product warranties vary depending on the manufacturer and equipment installed.

Can smart lighting be added to an existing house?
Absolutely. Many of our projects involve upgrading existing homes rather than new builds. During the survey we'll identify the least disruptive installation method.

11) What To Expect When You Get In Touch

The first conversation is usually informal.

We'll discuss your property, your goals and whether smart lighting is likely to be the right solution.

If it is, we'll arrange a visit, assess the existing installation and provide honest recommendations.

Sometimes that means a simple retrofit solution.

Sometimes it means designing a complete smart home lighting control system.

Either way, you'll receive clear advice based on what's right for your home rather than what's most expensive.

If you're planning a renovation, extension or simply want better control of the lighting in your home, SmartOhm be happy to help. We'll take the time to understand how you use the space, explain the options clearly and provide a detailed quotation without any pressure.
