At Smart Ohm, we recently completed a full house rewire for a 1930s home in West Park, Leeds, transforming it into a modern, all-electric property ready for the future. The home is a solidly built 1930s detached property, featuring solid brick walls, suspended timber floors, and lathe and plaster ceilings — all of which presented unique challenges when planning cable routes and minimising disruption to decor.
With no recent rewiring history, the existing installation was outdated and not suitable for the client’s decision to go fully electric. The home had previously used a wet central heating system, which was now being removed in favour of a modern electric radiator setup.

The client’s aim was to:
- Fully upgrade the property’s wiring for safety, compliance, and modern living.
- Replace all heating with electric radiators, each controllable via Wi-Fi for energy efficiency.
- Leave space in the electrical system for future solar panel and EV charger installation.
- Modernise socket layouts, including adding USB A and USB C sockets to every room.
- Complete the work with minimal disruption while the home remained occupied.
3) 🔧 Planning for a Live-in Rewire
Rewiring a property while it’s occupied requires a meticulous approach. In this case, we left the existing circuits in operation until the new wiring was fully tested and ready to take over, ensuring the client never lost access to essential power.
To protect the property, we used:
- Floor coverings and dust sheets throughout high-traffic areas.
- Soft furnishing protection where needed.
- Advanced dust extraction equipment to control airborne mess.
- Carefully planned cable routes to minimise wall damage, especially given the fragile lathe and plaster ceilings.
This allowed us to complete the rewire with as little disruption as possible, maintaining client comfort throughout.

We installed a double-stacked, 31-way consumer unit, designed not only to accommodate current circuits but to allow for:

Each radiator was placed on its own dedicated circuit to:
- Prevent overloading.

✅ USB A & USB C Socket Installation
We fitted modern dual USB A & C sockets in each room for:
- Convenient device charging.
- Decluttering of plug-in adaptors.
- Future-proof compatibility with newer technology.
