Commercial electrical work across Leeds and the surrounding areas — planned around your trading hours, tested and certified.

If you’re planning a commercial refurbishment, fitting out a new premises or upgrading an older electrical installation, you need to know the work is properly designed, installed, tested and suitable for the demands of the building.

At SmartOhm Electrical and Smart Home, we provide commercial electrical installation services across Leeds and the surrounding areas, including Wakefield, Huddersfield, Bradford, Harrogate and Castleford.

With more than 21 years of experience in the electrical industry, we’ve worked across offices, retail units, education settings, hospitality venues, warehouses and industrial environments. That means we’re comfortable working on everything from new lighting and power circuits through to distribution board upgrades, three-phase supplies, submains and complete commercial fit-outs.

The aim is always the same: to provide a safe, reliable electrical installation that works properly for the building, the equipment being used and the people working there.

Commercial Electrical Installation for Businesses Across Leeds

Commercial electrical work can vary enormously from one property to another.

An office may need additional socket circuits, LED lighting and data points. A retail unit may require a complete electrical fit-out before opening. A warehouse might need new three-phase supplies for machinery, additional distribution or alterations to lighting and power.

In education and hospitality settings, the work often needs to be carefully planned around existing occupants, opening hours and operational requirements.

We provide commercial electrical installation in Leeds for a wide range of properties and sectors, including:

  • Offices and commercial workspaces
  • Retail shops and units
  • Schools and education buildings
  • Restaurants, bars and hospitality venues
  • Warehouses and storage facilities
  • Workshops and industrial premises
  • Commercial landlords and property managers
  • Refurbishments and new fit-outs

Whether the job involves a small alteration or a much larger electrical installation, we take the time to understand what is actually required before work begins.

Office and Retail Electrical Fit-Outs

Office and retail fit-outs often involve much more than simply installing sockets and lights.

The electrical installation needs to suit the layout of the property, the equipment being used and any future requirements the business may have.

We can provide the electrical installation for office refurbishments, new commercial premises and retail fit-outs across Leeds and the surrounding areas.

This can include general power, lighting circuits, distribution equipment, dedicated supplies, data cabling and electrical testing and certification.

If the property already has an electrical installation in place, we’ll assess its condition and suitability before simply adding more circuits.

This is particularly important in older commercial buildings where the installation may have been altered several times over the years.

Commercial Lighting and Power Installations

Lighting and power form the basis of most commercial electrical installations.

We install new circuits for general lighting, socket outlets, fixed equipment and dedicated electrical loads.

The important part is making sure those circuits are properly designed for the expected demand.

In most cases, commercial premises change over time. Additional equipment gets installed, layouts change and the demands placed on the electrical installation increase.

That is why we look at the existing installation as a whole rather than simply connecting a new circuit wherever there happens to be space.

We can also install and upgrade LED lighting systems where older fluorescent or inefficient fittings are still in use.

Distribution Board Upgrades and Relocations

Commercial distribution boards are often at the centre of upgrade and refurbishment work.

Older boards may no longer provide the level of protection expected from a modern electrical installation, or they may simply have run out of capacity after years of alterations.

We carry out commercial distribution board upgrades and relocations throughout Leeds and the surrounding areas.

Before replacing or modifying a distribution board, we assess the existing circuits, supply arrangement and earthing so that the new installation is appropriate for the property.

Where required, existing circuits can also be tested before connection to a new board.

This can help identify problems that may otherwise remain hidden until the new installation is energised.

Three-Phase Electrical Installation

Many commercial and industrial properties rely on three-phase power for larger equipment, machinery and higher electrical loads.

We install and modify three-phase electrical supplies for commercial premises across Leeds.

This can include new three-phase circuits, equipment supplies, distribution equipment and submain installations.

The capacity of the existing electrical supply needs to be considered carefully before additional load is connected.

It’s not simply a case of installing a larger cable or breaker. The complete system needs to provide the correct protection and meet the requirements of the equipment being supplied.

A Recent Commercial Installation in Bradford

A recent project for a utilities contractor in Bradford is a good example of why commercial electrical installation work needs to be assessed properly rather than treated as a simple replacement.

The existing roller shutter doors serving the customer’s stores had been inspected and were found to be unsuitable, so they needed to be upgraded.

The replacement roller shutters were fitted with new motors that required different electrical supplies.

The existing circuits were not suitable for the new equipment and needed to be replaced.

We safely isolated and disconnected the old circuits, then installed new electrical circuits within trunking to supply the replacement roller shutters.

The control wiring was connected to the new motors and the completed circuits were tested and certified.

During the work, however, it became apparent that there was a more significant issue elsewhere in the installation.

The existing supply feeding the workshop area was insufficient and did not provide adequate automatic disconnection of supply.

Rather than ignoring the issue and simply completing the roller shutter work, we assessed what was required to put the installation right.

A new 35mm four-core submain was installed from the main building to the workshops, together with a separate 25mm circuit protective conductor.

The work also involved excavating approximately 50 metres of trench, installing suitable ducting and running the new supply cable between the buildings.

Once completed, the new supply provided the workshop with the level of protection and capacity required.

It’s a good example of something we see fairly often in older commercial installations.

A customer calls us in for one piece of work, but once we properly assess the installation it becomes clear that older circuits or supplies are no longer suitable for the demands now being placed on them.

Older Commercial Electrical Installations

One of the most common issues we come across is an electrical installation that has gradually been added to over many years.

A new machine gets installed. Another socket circuit is added. Lighting is altered. A distribution board is extended.

Eventually, the original installation can end up serving far more equipment than it was originally designed for.

This doesn’t automatically mean the entire installation needs replacing, but it does mean it needs to be properly assessed before additional work is carried out.

Common issues we find include:

  • Ageing electrical equipment
  • Distribution boards with limited spare capacity
  • Undersized circuits
  • Circuits being overloaded
  • Poorly planned alterations
  • Inadequate protection
  • Existing supplies that are no longer suitable for additional load
  • Electrical work with little or no previous testing documentation
  • Old containment that is no longer suitable for new cabling

The best way to deal with these situations is to understand the existing installation before deciding what work is needed.

That can often prevent unnecessary disruption later.

Commercial Electrical Work Planned Around Your Business

Electrical work in a commercial property often has to be carried out differently to work in a domestic home.

Downtime matters. Access can be restricted. Staff, customers or tenants may still be using the building. Certain circuits may only be available to isolate at specific times.

We take these practical considerations into account when planning commercial electrical work.

Where possible, we’ll discuss access, isolation requirements and the expected programme before work starts.

For some businesses this may mean carrying out sections of work around normal operating hours or planning isolations carefully to minimise disruption.

Clear communication is particularly important on commercial projects because electrical work often needs to coordinate with other trades, contractors or facilities teams.

Our Commercial Electrical Installation Process

Every project is different, but the general process is straightforward.

We usually begin by discussing what you need and getting an understanding of the property and intended installation.

For larger commercial projects, this may involve reviewing drawings, specifications or arranging a site visit.

We then assess the existing electrical installation where necessary, including available capacity and the condition of relevant equipment.

Once we understand what is required, we can explain the proposed work and provide a quotation.

When the work is agreed, we plan the installation around the site and your operational requirements.

The electrical installation is then completed, inspected and tested.

Once the work has been finished, the appropriate electrical certification is provided.

The aim is to keep the whole process clear from the first conversation through to final testing and handover.

Commercial Electrical Testing and Certification

Testing is an important part of any new commercial electrical installation.

It confirms that the circuits and protective measures have been installed correctly and that the installation is safe to put into service.

We use calibrated electrical test equipment to carry out the required testing on new circuits and alterations.

Where work falls within the scope of electrical certification, the relevant documentation is provided once the installation has been completed.

For businesses and facilities managers, having the correct documentation also makes future maintenance and electrical inspection much easier.

Materials and Equipment We Use

The materials used on commercial work depend on the building and the type of installation required.

We regularly work with equipment and systems including:

  • Hager distribution equipment
  • Schneider electrical equipment
  • Steel trunking and tray
  • SWA cabling
  • Three-phase equipment
  • LED lighting
  • Commercial accessories
  • Data cabling and containment
  • Calibrated electrical test equipment

We don’t specify products purely because of brand names.

The equipment needs to be suitable for the environment, load, installation method and expected use.
